Chamber Music

Chamber music forms a major focus within the framework of the practical training concept and on the concert platform:

"Experience of chamber music is an indispensible prerequisite for the development of a good musician and for a successful career. Chamber music is the basis of joint musicmaking and conveys experiences which are important for soloists, chamber and orchestral musicians and teachers alike. In a particular way it offers the opportunity for intensive practice of score-reading and interpretation, the practical application of intonation, rhythm, harmony and form. It is an indispensible tool for listening to and communicating with each other and with the audience. In addition it gives the students insights into organisational problems and rehearsal techniques. Tuition in "Chamber music" is obligatory for the majority of courses. In the postgraduate course (Zusatzstudium) chamber music is also offered as a principal subject.
We are especially pleased to be able to offer our ensembles opportunities for public performance. Thanks to continuous supervision by renowned teachers and interaction with outstanding students, many wonderful successes have been achieved, which can be seen in the careers of ensembles such as the Vogler, Petersen and Kuss Quartets."

Wayne Foster-Smith, tutor and coordinator of chamber music

In addition to regular chamber music courses, in 1997 a series of chamber music concerts entitled Musikforum Gendarmenmarkt was founded with the Konzerthaus Berlin. Here teachers from the Academy perform for their students, colleagues and the general public. These concerts often include renowned international guests and colleagues from the Berlin Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra as well as Academy students and graduates.

The International Kammermusiktage have been held since 2001. Partners of the Kammermusiktage are the respective embassies of the countries whose chamber music is featured. Concerts and workshops take place in the embassies and in the Academy.

The Kammermusikwerkstatt Berlin Paris Moskau is a cross-border project which is realized every three years in the Academy in Berlin in partnership with the Kulturveranstaltungs GmbH. The aim of the Kammermusikwerkstatt, whose tutors come from Berlin, Paris and Moscow, is the exchange between musical cultures, teaching methods and possibilities of interpretation. The chamber music ensembles work on classical and contemporary repertoire from the other countries and present their artistic interpretation in a closing concert.
