The Bachelor Program

The Bachelor of Music - Conducting aims at the aquirement of the following abilities:
- conducting techniques
- musical abilities (e.g. musical ear and memory, sense of rhythm, sense of style, creative imagination)
- interpretation abilities
- an independent musical and social personality
- a general musical education, independent thinking and acting in the musical as well as the non-musical field
The Bachelor study program prepares students in all mental and physical requirements for a successful career as conducters for orchestras, music theatre and ensembles.

Entrance RequirementsOutstanding artistic talent needs to be proved at the entrance examination.
Non-German applicants without a higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) need to have some knowledge of the German language. Required are:
1. The language certificate from the Goethe Institute at the level of B.2.2. of the Common European Framework of Reference. The language certificate has to be submitted at the entrance examination at the latest.
2. In the theoretical subjects of the entrance examination applicants need to prove their musical knowledge in German.
Entrance ExaminationTakes place twice a year:
- in May/June for the winter semester
- in January/February for the summer semester

Applicants will be officially invited to the entrance examination by the Academy!

The Entrance Examination

Main Subject Choir ConductingThe examination is divided into two rounds

First Round
1. Choir Conducting (implementation on three pianos); Carl Orff's Carmina Burana No. 7 "Floret silva" is obligatory
2. Performance of a chosen high-level solo piece for piano or orchestra instrument (also solo concert or pieces with paino accompaniment - in this case, candidates must bring their own accompanist).
After the first round the examination commission will decide about the admissions to the second round.

Second Round
1. Choir Conducting (also as lessons)
4 obligatory works:
- Paul Hindemith, from Zwölf Madrigale No. 8 „Der Judaskuss“
- L.van Beethoven, from "Fidelio" No. 10 to Allegro vivace
- Joseph Haydn, from "Schöpfung" No. 12 (In vollem Glanze)
- Johannes Brahms, Darthulas Grabgesang op. 42 No. 3
2. Coaching
- performance of a chosen choir scene (opera or choral symphony) with piano; singing of the various chorus parts (approx. 8 min.)
- sight-playing of easy excerpts from oratoriums or choruses
- sight-singing (atonal series without rhythm)
3. score-playing
- sight-playing of an easy choir score (modern clef)
- playing of old clefs (two-parts in two different clefs)
Pianoperformance of two chosen solo works, of which one has to be a slowly classic sonata movement or a baroque piece in a slow tempo
Music Theory (written and/or oral)- music reading in treble and bass clef as well as c-clef including the identification of the octave designation
- knowledge of all major and minor keys and their accidentals
- knowledge of all church modes
- identifying and writing down of intervals in the octave designation
- identifying and writing down of triads (in major and minor keys, diminished and augmented) and dominant seventh chords, including alterations
- knowledge of every primary and secondary triad in major and minor keys
- composing a short cadence (four part) according to diatonic functions
- analysis of a given short cadence
- playing of a simple and an augmented cadence on the piano
- harmonizing of a simple folk song on the piano
Aural Training (oral)- repetition of a played short melody
- tapping of a written rhythm with tying-overs and/or syncopes
- identifying and singing of scales in minor and major keys as well as church modes (up and down)
- repeating, identifying, and singing of intervals on octave designations (up and down)
- repeating, identifying, and singing of triads and dominant seventh chords, including alterations (up and down)
- repetition, identifying, and singing of other diatonic tetrachords and dominant seventh chords
- repetition of dissonant triads and tetrachords
- sight-singing of folk songs in treble and bass clef
InterviewSmall colloquy on general music issues in German with the following requirements:
- basic knowledge on music history from Bach to the present (problems of epochs: Baroque/Classicism/Romanticism/Modernism/Postmodernism
- development of an orchestra genre
- development of the opera
- development of choir singing (choir conducting)
