Chorus

The chorus is one of the performing ensembles within the framework of the Academy's education concept and is made up of students. Together with the symphony orchestra, concerts and projects are realised in e.g. the Konzerthaus at Gendarmenmarkt and the Berlin cathedral.

The chorus is also active in the Academy's opera productions. The chorus has appeared as guest in "classic open air" on the Gendarmenmarkt. Since 2002 a cappella concerts have been given in the French Friedrichstadt church.
Prof. Jörg-Peter Weigle has been the chorus director since 2001: ”The programme of the choral concert must fulfil several requirements. It should provide an opportunity for young people with trained voices as well as those who are just discovering that they can use their throats to sing to blend in a homogeneous sound. The programme should be simple but musically challenging and varied. In addition the musical work should strengthen the feeling of community in musicmaking. In other words we are perpetually trying to square the circle.”

Alongside the musical work with the students, the winter semester 2006/07 sees the first ”Hertzfrequenz” workshop for non-professional choral singers and choral conductors. Working with Prof. Jörg-Peter Weigle and experienced voice trainers, ambitious amateurs can learn to use their voices in a skilful and technically economical way, as a basis for a flexible voice section and for blending into the overall sound. In this workshop the priority lies not on performance but on tone production.
