The Bachelor study program for directing offers an education for directors who need to be able to work with and handle the diverse and ever changing requirements of the professional artistic life. The Bachelor program imparts basic technical knowledge to do so and encourages the individual's artistic abilities.
The study program provides
- basic technical knowledge in directing
- profound knowledge about theatre in theory and in practise
- basic knowledge about production and production planning
- as well as the education to enhance musical abilities.
It helps students to
- develop an artistic personality,
- develop individual imagination and creativity as well as
- analytic and conceptional abilities
to prepare them for a professional life as directors in the music theatre business.

| Entrance Requirements | Outstanding artistic talent needs to be proved at the entrance examination. Non-German applicants without a higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) need to have some knowledge of the German language. Required are: 1. The language certificate from the Goethe Institute at the level of B.2.2. of the Common European Framework of Reference. The language certificate has to be submitted at the entrance examination at the latest. 2. In the theoretical subjects of the entrance examination applicants need to prove their musical knowledge in German. |

| Main Subject Directing(Opera) | (Enrolling in the study program directing is only possible for the winter semester. The entrance examination normally takes place in June) Main Subject: The entrance examination for directing consists of two parts: 1. a theoretical exam in the main subject. The candidate can chose from a selection of topics of a given list of works. At the end of the application period (April 15) applicants will be notified about the literature used in the entrance examination 2. a practical exam in the main subject on given topics Prerequisites: 1. the production concept of a play chosen from the work list has to be submitted in writing two weeks before the actual entrance examination 2. experience in theatre production is not a necessity, but is desirable Requirements: The theoretical exam will focus on the following: - rendition of the work's contents - basic musical knowledge - presentation of scenic stage (e.g. by a model stage design) - presentation of a production concept in an extemporaneous speech, if possible The practical examination will decide if applicants show great talent in the following fields: - imagination - creativity - expression - organizing skills For more information a previous discussion with the department's advisory office is highly suggested. |

| Music Theory (written and/or oral) | - music reading in treble and bass clef including the identification of the octave designation - knowledge of all major and minor keys and their accidentals - knowledge of all church modes - identifying and writing down of intervals in the octave designation - identifying and writing down of triads (in major and minor keys, diminished and augmented) and dominant seventh chords, including alterations - knowledge of every primary and secondary triad in major and minor keys - composing a short cadence (four part) according to diatonic functions - analysis of a given short cadence |
