
Prof. Gabriele Kupfernagel was born in Chemnitz and received her first musical training from her mother. Later she studied at the specialist music school in Dresden, and then at the Dresden Hochschule für Musik in the piano class of Gerhard Berge. After her graduation she was given the opportunity to study for three years at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow with Tatjana Nikolajewa. In 1972 Gabriele Kupfernagel was a prizewinner at the International Bach Competition in Leipzig, and in 1974 and 1975 she was awarded the Mendelssohn scholarship. Since then she has performed regularly as soloist and in chamber music ensembles both in Germany and abroad. Numerous recordings and radio and TV broadcasts document her wide range of instrumental activities. In 1978, Kupfernagel took up a teaching post at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin, and in 1992 she became Professor of Piano and Chamber Music.
