
Prof. Dr. Hartmut Grimm was born in Schwann and studied music education and German from 1974-78 in both Halle and Berlin. From 1978-82 he he did research studies in musicology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and gained a doctorate in 1983 with his dissertation 'Between Classics and Positivism - Eduard Hanslick's Form Concept'. From 1982-86 Grimm served as an academic assistant in the musicology department of the GDR Association of Composers and Musicologists. This was followed by an assistantship at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin, where he became Professor of Music History/Aesthetics in 1992. Hartmut Grimm has published various works on the aesthetics and history of music in the 18th and 19th centuries. He is currently researching the history of the concept of 'Affekt' in music, Hugo Wolf and the theory and aesthetics of 18th century music.
