Historical and Contemporary Composition - Bachelor of Music
The Bachelor of Music study program for Historical and Contemporary Composition is designed to impart abilities and techniques that enable students to become creative and productive as well as educationally involved musicians. In addition, multidisciplinary key skills are developed supporting the students' independence in many ways, especially with regard to a future freelance work. The studies shall provide an excellent preperation for the professional life of a musician. This will be achieved by a broad and diverse musical education preparing students physically and mentally for a successful standing in the great pluralism of the musical profession.

| Entrance Requirements | Outstanding artistic talent needs to be proved at the entrance examination. Non-German applicants without a higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) need to have some knowledge of the German language. Required are: 1. The language certificate C1 of the Goethe Institute or the "Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache - Level 4" of the TestDaf Institute. The language certificate has to be submitted at the entrance examination at the latest. 2. In the theoretical subjects of the entrance examination applicants need to prove their musical knowledge in German. |

| Main Subject Historical and Contemporary Composition | Applicants are required to submit scores of several own adaptions and arrangements varying in instrumentation and structure for pre-screening. The additional presentation of own compositions will be appreciated. Proof of knowledge in basic musicology: - music reading in treble and bass clef as well as c-clef including the identification of the octave designation - knowledge of all major and minor keys and their accidentals - knowledge of all church modes - identifying and writing down of intervals in the octave designation - identifying and writing down of triads (in major and minor keys, diminished and augmented) and dominant seventh chords, including alterations - knowledge of other diatonic tetrachords and dominant seventh chords - knowledge of every primary and secondary triad in major and minor keys - composing a short cadence (four part) according to diatonic functions - analysis of a given short cadence - playing of a simple and an augmented cadence with modulations on the piano - playing and composing of figured bass tasks - harmonizing of a folk song on the piano |
| Obligatory Subject Piano | - one baroque solo piece (e.g. a three-part Bach Invention) - a solo piece from Viennese Classicism (e.g. first movement of a sonata by Beethoven) - one work from the 19th to 21st century, own composition or chamber music will also be acknowledged |
| Obligatory Subject Aural Training (oral) | - repetition of a played short melody - tapping of a written rhythm with tying-overs and/or syncopes - identifying and singing of scales in minor and major keys as well as church modes (up and down) - repeating, identifying, and singing of intervals on octave designations (up and down) - repeating, identifying, and singing of triads and dominant seventh chords, including alterations (up and down) - repetition, identifying, and singing of other diatonic tetrachords and dominant seventh chords - repetition of dissonant triads and tetrachords - sight-singing of folk songs in treble and bass clef |
