International Applicants

Language Skills

Before the closing dates for application, you must present evidence of the German language courses you have taken, compatible with the "Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache"(ZDaF) of the Goethe Institute.

Upon enrolment you must present proof that you have passed the "Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung" (ZMP), which can be taken in any Goethe Institute. If this proof cannot be provided, your enrolment may be postponed.

In Germany, the ZDaF and ZMP can be obtained in a Goethe Institute or at a number of other language schools. In foreign countries, as a rule, the ZDaF and ZMP can only be obtained from the local branch of the Goethe Institute.

Further information about German classes, including a list of Goethe Institute branches in Germany and abroad, can be found on the appropriate home page (http://www.goethe.de). Further questions should be addressed to the International Affairs office of the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler,

Scholarships

The HfM does not provide scholarships. Before coming to Germany you can apply for a scholarship from the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). Applications may be made in your home country at a German Consulate or through your local Department of Education.

Comprehensive information about the DAAD can be found on the corresponding home page (www.daad.de).

Visa

If you require a visa to enter Germany, it is very important that you apply for a student applicant visa ("Studienbewerbervisum"). If you pass the entrance examinations for the HfM, you can have this changed in Germany into a student visa ("Studienvisum"). A listing of countries requiring visas can be found on the home page of the German Foreign Office ("Auswärtiges Amt"): www.auswaertiges-amt.de

For a student applicant visa application ("Studienbewerbervisum") from a German Consulate, the following documents are generally required:

  1. 1. A school-leaving certificate that is recognized in Germany and fulfils the appropriate entrance requirements for the particular course of study at a German university or college.
  2. 2. Proof that you can finance your living costs during your stay in Germany. This can be proved by:
  • proof of your parents' income and their financial situation
  • a statement from a third person, committing him/herself to financing all your monetary needs
  • depositing a sum of money as security into a blocked account ("Sperrkonto") in Germany.
  • a bank surety at a German financial institution, to be renewed annually
  • proof of a scholarship from German public funds, or from public funds in your home country, if the German Foreign Office, the DAAD or another German scholarship-awarding organization has undertaken the transfer to the German university or college
  • a valid passport, as well as a fully completed application form obtainable from the German Consulate

Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners' Authority)

All foreign students are required to register on arrival with the state residents' registration office (Landeseinwohneramt), department of foreigners' affairs (Abteilung Ausländerangelegenheiten).
This applies whether entry to the Federal Republic of Germany is with or without a visa.

From the winter semester 2004/2005 this office holds special consultation days for students newly arrived in the country.
