BAföG
Even though you are not a German citizen, you can apply for a student loan that is awarded in accordance with the Federal Student's assistance Act, BAföG. Prerequisites are:
- your are recognized as a refugee and/or as having a right of asylum
- mother, father or spouse is German
- you have worked in Germany for five years prior to your studies, vocational training excluded.
- mother or father have been employed in Germany for at least three years during the past six years.
- you fulfill certain criterias of residence (e.g. permanent residence in Germany, residence permit or settlement permit according to the regulations of immigration laws)
Please consult the Studentenwerk Berlin for further and thorough advice, since your BAföG qualification is subjected to BAföG as well as immigration laws.

DAAD - German Academc Exchange Service
International students can also apply at the DAAD for a scholarship. More information can be found on their website.
Graduation Loan
Once a year the Academy awards students in their last year a graduation loan. Students interested need to apply in written form and participate in an audition. Please check the bulletin board in your department and our aktuelle Ausschreibungen for detailed information.
The Studentenwerk Berlin allocates grants for international students and German single parent students in the phase of graduation in accordance with social supplement laws. Prerequisite is that studies have been financed primarily by gainful employment. In addition, students have to be in their examination period. Moreover, students can be supported if they have suffered from severe short-term illness. If this is the case, students can take up a loan of 515,-€ at the Studentenwerk. Prerequisite here is a statement of a regular income.
DAAD-Prize
The DAAD Prize is awarded anually by the academy and it is endowed with 1000,-€. Please check the bulletin board in your department as well as the aktuelle Ausschreibungen.
Other Scholarships
The Academy of Music 'Hanns Eisler' does not offer any scholarships. But we have compiled a list of agencies and institutions from various fields that do. Among them are programs that aim explicitly at international students.
Working
Two-thirds of our students earn their living by paid work. The Studentenwerk Berlin operates/keeps/maintains an employment agency, 'Heinzelmännchen', you can turn to.
Students of music can also turn to the ZAV-Künstlervermittlung that is run by the Federal Employment Agency.
Student Loans
Many banks and credit institutions offer student loans. Entitled to apply are Germans and EU citizens who have been reciding in Germany for at least three years. The Studentenwerk offers a special service in advising students with regard to viewing options and offers as well as answering critical questions before a contract is concluded.
Credit Counseling
Despite the many efforts you have taken, you have contracted debts and you are unable to pay the regular costs? The Studentenwerk provides a special social counseling service for these occassions. You can also turn to them if you seek general counseling in how to finance your studies.
