Fee

The Conference of Directors of the Music Acadamies in the Federal Republic of Germany has decided to charge a fee of 30.- € per candidate for participation in the admission procedure at all German music academies, irrespective of the intended course of study.

This fee is intended to minimize the high staff costs incurred in the preparation and carrying out of the admission procedure (e.g. providing examination boards for the individual principal subjects, compulsory piano, music theory, harmony and aural training, often in a multistage selection process).

Proof of payment - the requirement for and your entitlement to participation in the admission procedure - must be submitted with the application documents.
The pay-in slip must be countersigned by the relevant financial institution; slips not countersigned may only be submitted with the bank statement.
Pay-in slips which are not countersigned and are submitted without a bank statement will unfortunately not be recognised as having been submitted and will not entitle the applicant to participation in the admission procedure.
Failure to appear at the entrance examinations, including advance withdrawal of the application, does not entitle the applicant to a refund of the fee.

The 30,- € are to be paid as follows:

Recipient: Hochschule für Musik
Financial institution: Postbank Berlin
Account no.: 581 403 101
Bank sorting code: 100 100 10
Payment reference: applicant's name

For transfers from abroad you will also require the following details:

IBAN: DE77100100100581403101

Recognition of qualifications

Examination results from other university level colleges can usually be accepted.
Candidates for undergratuate study who have already studied at a German academy are exempted from the entrance examinations in the compulsory subjects piano, harmony, aural training and history of music, on provision of a matriculation certificate. Exemption from the compulsory subjects can also be granted for previous studies abroad. For candidates for the JIB, the rules of the Institute apply.

Relevant subjects already studied at another college or university may be recognized after a successful entrance audition on submission of an appropriate application form for this purpose.

If the qualification gained in your home country is not equivalent to the German diploma, it is recommended that students applying for postgraduate studies first obtain a German diploma, assuming that they meet the entrance requirements.

The examining board decides

  • into which semester you would be placed
  • how and whether exam results from your previous college can be accepted
  • into which semester you would be placed for the German diploma.

International Applicants

International applicants must present a certificate of the intermediate level exam (Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung, ZMP from the Goethe-Institute) or a certicate of the "Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache - Niveaustufe 4" from the TestDaF Institute at the entrance examination. Failure to produce this means matriculation is restricted to a maximum of 2 semesters. Apart from this, all entrance requirements are the same as for German applicants. For candidates for the JIB, the rules of the Institute apply.

Youth programme

The youth programme is specially designed to prepare highly talented young musicians (aged 11 and upwards) for a music college education.

The entrance requirements can be found in the appropriate booklets obtainable from the
Academy (Zulassungsordnung; Studium zur Förderung des musikalisch besonders begabten Nachwuchses).
