German Language Requirements

International applicants who cannot present a German Abitur need to have sufficient knowledge of the German language. Applicants need to prove their language abilities by either of the following options:

1. the language certificate C1 of the Goethe-Institut or the "Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache - Niveaustufe 4" of the TestDaF-Institut, or
2. by proving subject-based comprehension of the German language in the theoretical parts of the entrance examination.

The language certificate has to be submitted before the entrance examination can be taken.
Applicants whose subject-based comprehension is not sufficient can only be enrolled temporarily.
Temporarily enrolled international applicants are obligated to take the German language course offered by the academy and to pass the final exam.

Only language certificates obtained at a Goethe-Institut abroad can be accepted.

Costs and Fees

The courses are free, apart from the AStA fee of 7,00€, social fund contribution of 3,00€ and the social contribution, currently 41,20€ per semester, which is paid to the student administration. This fee contributes to the financing of student facilities such as the canteens, kindergarten, advice services, etc. In addition, Berlin’s academic institutions require payment of an enrolment/re-registration fee of 50,00€ and 163,50€ for the Semesterticket (public transport pass). Apart from living costs (at least 650€ per month), you should also plan for necessary health insurance fees (currently around 60€).

Accomodation

Unfortunately, the academy does not provide accomodation. We have prepared two lists you can consult for rooms or appartments to rent, either for a short stay in Berlin (e.g. for the entrance examination) or for a longer stay.

Acceptance of Previous Academic Assessments

In general, previously achieved academic credits will be recognized.
After passing the entrance examination, you can make an application for recognition
of study credits gained elsewhere. Application forms are obtainable from the
enrolment office.
The examination board decides which semester you would enter, i.e. after moving
from another academic institution you will not automatically enter the next higher
semester.
If you apply for an undergraduate study program (Bachelor) and if you have already studied at another
music academy within the area covered by the Higher Education Framework Act
(transfer from a German academic institution), you can be exempted from the entrance
examinations in the compulsory subjects piano, harmony, aural training and history of
music on presentation of proof of matriculation.
If you are an applicant who has studied at a foreign academic institution, you may be
exempted from the compulsory subjects piano, harmony, aural training and history of
music if a written request and appropriate credits for proof of equivalence are
included with the application.
Due to the agreements between Germany and other countries concerning reciprocal
recognition of study credits, it is possible that a diploma gained in the home country
is not equivalent to a German diploma. In the case of application for a postgraduate
course, it is recommended to gain a German diploma first in order to qualify
for the course, on condition that you fulfil the entrance requirements.

Visa

If you require a visa to enter Germany, it is very important that you apply for a student applicant visa ("Studienbewerbervisum"). If you pass the entrance examinations for the HfM, you can have this changed in Germany into a student visa ("Studienvisum"). A listing of countries requiring visas can be found on the home page of the German Foreign Office ("Auswärtiges Amt"): www.auswaertiges-amt.de

For a student applicant visa application ("Studienbewerbervisum") from a German Consulate, the following documents are generally required:

1. 1. A school-leaving certificate that is recognized in Germany and fulfils the appropriate entrance requirements for the particular course of study at a German university or college.
2. 2. Proof that you can finance your living costs during your stay in Germany. This can be proved by:

* proof of your parents' income and their financial situation
* a statement from a third person, committing him/herself to financing all your monetary needs
* depositing a sum of money as security into a blocked account ("Sperrkonto") in Germany.
* a bank surety at a German financial institution, to be renewed annually
* proof of a scholarship from German public funds, or from public funds in your home country, if the German Foreign Office, the DAAD or another German scholarship-awarding organization has undertaken the transfer to the German university or college
* a valid passport, as well as a fully completed application form obtainable from the German Consulate

For applicants from China:

Please note: Applicants from China need in addition a confirmation or certificate of the Academic Evaluation Center (Akademische Prüfstelle, APS) at the German Embassy in Beijing.
If you have any questions regarding procedure, documents and fees, please contact the Center directly:

Scholarships

The HfM does not provide scholarships. Before coming to Germany you can apply for a scholarship from the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). Applications may be made in your home country at a German Consulate or through your local Department of Education.

State Office for Residents' and Regulatory Affairs

All foreign students are required to register on arrival with the state residents' registration office (Landeseinwohneramt), department of foreigners' affairs (Abteilung Ausländerangelegenheiten).
This applies whether entry to the Federal Republic of Germany is with or without a visa.

From the winter semester 2004/2005 this office holds special consultation days for students newly arrived in the country.
