
Kammersängerin Prof. Julia Varady was born in Hungary. Early musical education, in which singing featured strongly from her 14th year. Performances while still a student at the Hungarian Opera in Cluji. Engagements in Munich for a production of Mozart’s Titus by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, at the Edinburgh Festival ("Alceste"), in Salzburg ("Idomeneo"), at La Scala Milan ("The Marriage of Figaro") and the Metropolitan Opera ("Don Giovanni"), at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Covent Garden Opera London, Staatsoper Wien. Julia Varady sings the complete Mozart and Verdi repertoire as well as Puccini, Strauss, Wagner and contemporary works. As a concert singer Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Mahler, Schumann and Berlioz, amongst others. Worked with such conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Karl Böhm, Sir Colin Davis, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elliott Gardiner, Herbert von Karajan, Fabio Luisi, Seiji Ozawa, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Sir Georg Solti. Numerous awards for recordings. Since 2000 guest professor for Opera Interpretation at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin.
