
Karoline Gruber, born in Austria. Theatre studies and musicology, art history and philosophy at Vienna University. Several nominations in the Opernwelt critics’ poll for the category Best Director/Best production. At first freelance production assistant for directors such as Achim Freyer, Götz Friedrich, Maximilian Schell and Harry Kupfer, since1992 freelance director, e.g. senior director for music theatre at the state theatre in Linz and chief director for music theatre at the state theatre in Kassel. Numerous directing projects, including in 2002 Joseph Haydn’s “Il mondo della luna“ with René Jacobs at the Innsbruck Early Music Festival and at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. In 2003 Claudio Monteverdi’s “L’Incoronazione di Poppea“ with Alessandro De Marchi at the Hamburg State Opera, also there in 2004 “Nabucco“ by Giuseppe Verdi and “Giulio Cesare in Egitto“ by George Frederick Handel, also in 2004 “Dardanus“ by Jean-Philippe Rameau at the Bonn Theatre. In 2005 “Cleofide“ by Johann Adolph Hasse at the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden and “Eine florentinische Tragödie“ by Alexander von Zemlinsky and “Gianni Schicchi“ by Giacomo Puccini athe New National Theatre, Tokyo. In addition, “Le Villi“ by Giacomo Puccini at the Vienna State Opera. In 2006 Jan Müller-Wieland’s “Der Held der westlichen Welt“ at the Cologne Opera. In 2008 Emmanuel Nunes’ “Das Märchen“ at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon and Richard Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos“ at the Leipzig Opera as well as “Salome“ at the Biwako Hall in Japan. In 2009 Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s “Wachsfigurenkabinett“ and Kurt Weill’s “Berliner Requiem“ at the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau, and Gioachino Rossini“s “Il barbiere di Siviglia“ at the St. Moritz Opera’s Opera Festival. In 2010 “Dialogues des Carmélites“ by Francis Poulenc at the University of the Arts Berlin, “Elegie für junge Liebende“ by Hans Werner Henze at the Aalto Theatre in Essen and “Platée“ by Jean-Philippe Rameau at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Many masterclasses, 2005-10 professor of Stagecraft at the University of the Arts Berlin. From the winter semester 2011/12 appointed visiting professor for stage directing at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin.
