The symphony orchestra of the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin consists of instrumental students and gives regular public concerts. In Berlin the orchestra appears regularly in the Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt and in the Berlin Philharmonie. From 1979 to 2001 Prof. Hans-Dieter Baum was the orchestral director.

Since 2002 it has been conducted by Prof. Christian Ehwald. The orchestra has worked with guest conductors including János Czifra, Alun Francis, Peter Gülke, Lutz Köhler, Marc Piollet, Sir Simon Rattle, Rolf Reuter, Helmuth Rilling, Hanns-Martin Schneidt, Jörg-Peter Weigle and Sebastian Weigle.
As well as orchestral concerts, members of the symphony orchestra also play for the Academy’s opera productions. Internationally renowned conductors regularly lead workshops with the symphony orchestra which are open to the public. This series began in 2001 with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and has continued with Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Simon Rattle and Christian Thielemann.
