Prof. Thomas Quasthoff

Thomas Quasthoff studied singing with Prof. Charlotte Lehmann and Prof. Ernst Huber-Contwig in Hannover. Numerous national and international prizes, e.g. 1st prize in the ARD International Music Competition in München in 1988, the Schostakovich Prize in Moscow in 1996 and the Hamada Trust/Scotsman Festival Prize at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1996, the Grammy Award of the US music industry in 1999 for his recording of Mahler’s „Wunderhorn-Lieder“ and in 2004 for the best classical vocal recording, his interpretation of Schubert songs, and in 2006 for a recording of Bach cantatas, European Arts Award 2006 and the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in 2009. Worked with the conductors Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Colin Davis, Bernard Haitink, Mariss Janssons, Kurt Masur, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Simon Rattle, Helmuth Rilling, Christian Thielemann and Franz Welser-Möst. Concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. As recitalist he has appeared in the Konzerthaus and the Musikverein in Vienna, the Konzerthaus and the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, in Munich, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid and at the Festivals in Salzburg, Edinburgh, Lucerne, the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Schwetzingen und Schleswig-Holstein. USA debut at the Oregon Bach Festival 1995. Since then regular appearances with the symphony orchestras in Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and New York. Guest at American Festivals, e. g. Ravinia Festival, Tanglewood and Mostly Mozart. In October 2001 opened the season at the Carnegie Hall as soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado. In the 2001/2002 season four concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado and Sir Simon Rattle. In March 2002 recital tour including Boston, Washington, St. Paul, San Francisco. Operatic debut as the minister in Fidelio“ with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle at the Salzburg Easter Festival 2003. Debut at the Vienna State Opera as Amfortas in Wagner’s „Parsifal“ under Donald Runnicles 2004. Numerous CD recordings of songs by Mahler, Brahms, Liszt, Schubert, Mozart and Haydn. Grand Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany 2005. 1996-2004 Professor of Singing at the Detmold Academy of Music. Since 2004 Professor of Singing at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin. initiator of the Lieder competition „Das Lied – International Song Competition“, which took place for the first time in 2009 in Berlin.
