Das schlaue Füchslein

"The cunning little vixen" tells the story of a wild, curious, and unconventional young vixen who falls into the clutches of a forester. But he can't rest easy for long: the little fox causes a stir in the forester's lodge, bites off the rooster's head, and incites the hens to revolt – and finally manages to escape back into the forest. In the freedom of nature, she finds happiness and starts a family with a male fox, until her life comes to an abrupt end with a shot from a poacher. 

Leoš Janáček composed the opera in 1924 at the age of almost 70, based on a picture story by Stanislav Lolek and Rudolf Těsnohlídek published in the Czech newspaper "Lidové noviny". The episodic structure of the source material is reflected in the music: atmospheric interludes connect the individual scenes of the animal and human worlds. The humans gaze longingly at untamed nature, which unwaveringly follows its own cycle of life, love, and death.
