Boyang Zhang wins second prize at the World Marimba Competition

Chinese percussionist Boyang Zhang, who is currently completing her bachelor's degree in the percussion class of Prof. Biao Li, Prof. Franz Schindlbeck and Prof. Rainer Seegers, won several prizes at the 8th World Marimba Competition. She received the 2nd prize worth €7,000, the audience prize worth €1,000, the Soma Dance Prize and the Li Biao Prize. The international marimba competition took place from 16 to 24 August 2025 in Hangzhou, China.

Boyang Zhang received her first piano lessons at the age of four and her first percussion lessons at the age of eight. In 2023, she began studying percussion at the Eisler in Berlin. The 21-year-old musician can already look back on numerous successes: in 2018, she won first place at the 13th China Youth Percussion Competition and second place at the IPEA International Percussion Competition in Shanghai, China. This was followed in 2019 by first prize at the Italy Percussion Competition. In 2021, she won second place at the International Marimba Competition in Bamberg and first place at the International Percussion Youth Competition in Belgium.

She gained orchestral experience with the National Youth Orchestra of China, among others, performing on international stages under the baton of renowned conductors such as Ludovic Morlot and Garrick Ohlsson. She has appeared as a soloist at venues including the Shenzhen Concert Hall in the Steinway & Sons Garden in 2018 and the National Grand Theatre for the Performing Arts of China in 2021.
