Survey for a nationwide study on abuse of power begins

From May 2026, the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin will be participating in a nationwide, independent, cross-institutional study on the manifestations and prevention of abuse of power at German music academies. The study is being conducted independently and with complete anonymity by the Institute for Applied Research and Project Consultancy (IPP) in Munich on behalf of the Rectors’ Conference of German Music Academies.

The aim of the study is to obtain, for the first time, comprehensive and reliable findings on the extent and manifestations of abuse of power at German music academies. The study will also examine structural characteristics at the music academies and assess the effectiveness of existing prevention and sanction measures implemented by the institutions.

Qualitative findings are to be differentiated according to departments and institution-specific characteristics. Furthermore, structural features of teaching formats, such as in individual artistic tuition or small-group tuition, are to be examined with regard to potential risks and protective factors. Finally, the effectiveness of existing prevention and sanction measures at the conservatoire is to be reviewed – including in the context of the recommendations for action on dealing with abuse of power at music academies adopted in May 2024 by the Rectors’ Conference of German Music Conservatoires (RKM).

By taking part in the study, the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin aims to set an example of open engagement with power dynamics and to promote a respectful, non-discriminatory and safe learning and working environment.
