At the winter conference of German music academies on 11 January 2026, the presidents and rectors of the 24 German music academies elected Prof. Andrea Tober, rector of the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, as their new chairwoman by an overwhelming majority. She will succeed Prof. Christian Fischer, Rector of the Trossingen University of Music, in October 2026. The RKM winter conference was traditionally held at the end of the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK).

Andrea Tober: "I am very grateful for the overwhelming trust that has been placed in me with my election to this important office. Especially in a time of profound social and political upheaval, when our universities are facing major challenges, it is our common task to unequivocally bring the indispensable role of culture and education as pillars of our society into the political discourse. Building on the strong foundation laid by my predecessors, we must now work together with all our might to set the course for the future and to strengthen and permanently secure our excellent, vibrant, open and forward-looking music college landscape."

The official handover will take place in September. The other members of the new board will be elected at the upcoming summer conference of the RKM.
