Wagner for children: A long-term cooperation between the Hanns Eisler directing course and the Bayreuth Festival

Stephen Gould, one of the world's most sought-after Wagner singers, is on stage in the Bayreuth Children's Opera - in a production by Eisler student and director Dennis Krauss. Since 2009, students and graduates of the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin have directed the Wagner Opera for Children at the Bayreuth Festival every year and can work with an outstanding cast. For already experienced directing students, the possibility of staging the children's opera as well as assistance in the current productions are a cornerstone for the career of music theater directors. In this festival season, Dennis Krauß is directing the children's opera “Tristan und Isolde”, in the version developed by Katharina Wagner, Markus Latsch and himself. The premiere will take place on July 25, 2021, 11 a.m., on the Kulturbühne Reichshof, followed by nine other performances. The Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt / Oder will play under the direction of the Austrian conductor Azis Sadikovic.

Within this university cooperation, regular excursions to the Bayreuth Festival are one of the most important stops for the Eisler directing course. Festival director Katharina Wagner has been honorary professor at the university since 2010 and gives workshops for students in Berlin, among other things. Since the first edition of the children's operas brought to life by the festival director, the directing students from the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin have been there.
