Health Insurance

Proof of adequate health insurance is required for enrolment.

German Health Insurance

  • If you are publically insured, please request an insurance confirmation letter from your health insurance provider. A copy of your insurance card or a membership confirmation is not sufficient.
  • If you are privately insured, please request an insurance confirmation letter from your health insurance provider. You will also need to submit a confirmation letter issued by a public health insurance provider that you are exempted from mandatory public insurance (called “Bescheinigung über die Befreiung von der gesetzlichen Krankenversicherungspflicht” in German).

Non-German Health Insurance

  • If you are publically insured in an EU/EEA state, you will need to take your health insurance card to a German public insurance provider to get a confirmation letter that you are exempted from mandatory public insurance (called “Bescheinigung über die Befreiung von der gesetzlichen Krankenversicherungspflicht” in German).
  • Private health insurance companies from other countries may also be recognized in Germany. Please inquire directly with a public German insurance provider about your specific private insurance.
  • You can also take out German student health insurance. Costs at the different providers vary only slightly for students.

Erasmus Students

  • The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) offers health insurance for international students doing exchange semesters in Germany, for example through the Erasmus+ programme. More information about this insurance can be found here.
