Requirements
  • Advanced musical ability in the programme subject which must be demonstrated in the audition exam
  • International applicants without German university entry permission must provide evidence of their German language skills through:
    1. Sprachzertifikat B.2.2 (GER) of the Goethe Institute or TestDaF – Level 4 from the TestDaF Institute.
    Language certificates must be submitted during enrolment at the latest.
    2. Technical German language skills in music will be assessed during the music theory examination.

Audition Exam Composition

Audition Programme

Depending on applications recieved, there may be a preliminary screening.

In the audition exam, the applicant must display their special compositional talent, specific abilities, elocution and knowledge.

This includes:

  • presentation of several own compositions with varying instrumentation in the form of written, fixed scores, which must be submitted with the application documents. An additional presentation of sound and/or video recording of own works (also to be submitted with application documents) is also possible
  • demonstration of general musical ability (see compulsory subjects compositional technique and ear training)
  • ear training oral
    • repeat (sing) short melodic passages heard
    • beat a notated rhythm with ties and/or syncopation
    • determine and sing major and minor scales as well as modal scales (ascending and descending)
    • repeat, determine and sing intervals in an octave (ascending and descending)
    • repeat, determine and sing triads and dominant seventh chords with inversions (ascending and descending)
    • repeat, determine and sing other diatonic 4-tone chords and dominant ninth chords
    • repeat (sing) dissonant triads and 4-note chords
    • sight-read (sing) a choir part of medium difficulty in treble clef and/or bass clef
  • elementary knowledge of organology
  • knowledge of important historical and contemporary musical works

Audition Exams Piano, Compositional Technique, Ear Training

Compulsory Exam Piano
  • one baroque solo work (e.g. three part Invention by J. S. Bach)
  • one solo work of the First Viennese School (e.g. sonata first movement by Beethoven)
  • one work of the 19th to the 21st century, can be an own composition or chamber music
Compulsory Exam Compositional Technique (written)
  • notation in treble and bass clefs
  • knowledge of keys and their accidentals in major and minor
  • knowledge of major and minor scales, including modal keys
  • determination and notation of intervals in designated octaves
  • determination and notation of triads (major, minor, diminished, augmented) and dominant seventh chords, including reversals
  • knowledge of the primary and secondary functions in major and minor
  • spelling of a short cadence (four parts) according to the functional and level symbols
  • analysis of two short excerpts from different musical epochs
Compulsory Exam Ear Training (written)
  • melody dictation (Baroque and/or classical melodies)
  • rhythmic dictation (binary and ternary rhythms with slurs and/or syncopation)
  • determination of major and minor scales as well as modal scales
  • determination and notation of intervals of designated octaves
  • determination of triads and dominant seventh chords with inversions (ascending and descending)
  • aural analysis of two short music examples from different musical epochs
Transfer Applicants
  • Applicants for undergraduate studies who have already studied at a German RKM music school and are applying to transfer to HFM are exempt from taking the exams in piano, composition, and ear training if they are able to provide a matriculation certificate/certificate of enrolment.
  • Applicants who have studied at another German or foreign music university/school are eligible for exemption from taking the exams in piano, composition, and ear training if they are able to provide appropriate evidence of academic assessments as decided informally by the Exam Commission.

Audition Exam

Audition Exam ProcessThe audition exam consists of two parts, the composition exam and the minor subjects exam in music theory and ear training.

Based on the submitted documents for application, a pre-selection is conducted in accordance with the access and entrance regulations.

Requirements

For the audition exam and the composition course itself, all applicants must display specific technical German language skills. This must be proved through the ability to interact in an academic and composition-typical setting (lesson situation) in German.

This includes amongst others:

  • language proficiency in academic, composition learning and standard situations
  • ability to read and comment on popular and technically relevant texts
  • good active command of spoken and written specific terms
  • verbal and written proficiency in important technical communication forms as well as the general ability to hold a technical discussion
Composition Component

In the entrance exam, the applicant must be able to prove his or her specific compositional skills, elocution and knowledge, and be able to represent personal artistic statements with regard to individual strengths and areas of interest before the exam commission.

This includes:

  • presentation of several own compositions of various instrumentations in written fixed scores, submitted upon application, an additional presentation in audio or video format is also possible
  • a colloquium on the presented works held in German
  • a musical and interpretative presentation
Minor Subject Component

Proof of the acquired knowledge and skills in the subjects of music theory, ear training and instrumental play at the proficiency level of a bachelor graduate in accordance with

  • the core subjects compositional technique and ear training
  • knowledge of important musical works of the past and present

Junior Scholars

Programme DurationParticipation in Junior Scholars ends at the age of 18, unless he or she has not completed their schooling. If this is the case, participation will end in the semester that he or she completes schooling.

Audition Programme

Every candidate must participate in the audition exam process. The purpose of the exam is to assess applicants' compositional skills, their general music abilities, as well as determine whether applicants possess exceptional artistic talent.

As evidence for exceptional talent in composition, applicants must submit several of their own compositions.
