  • Advanced musical ability in the programme subject which must be demonstrated in the audition exam
  • Applicants without German university entry permission must provide evidence of their German language skills through:
    • Language certificate B 2.2 (GER) of the Goethe Institute, ÖSD, telc GmbH or TestDaF – Level 4, DSD II, DSH I or UNIcert II.
      Language certificates must be submitted during enrolment at the latest.
    • Technical German language skills in music will be assessed during the music theory examination.

Pre-selection

Procedure

For the pre-selection the platform muvac is used.

On muvac you can link video and audio recordings from YouTube, Soundcloud, Vimeo, Youku and Dropbox on your profile.

Based on the linked audio/video recordings the pre-selection is made subsequent to the application period.

Please check that the recordings are available and accessable via the links provided (without password/no login function).

  • One video or three individual videos according to the requirements of the repertoire.
  • The applicant must be clearly visible.

Three works of free choice as follows:

  • of a self-directed rehearsal with a singer or instrumental soloist
  • of an opera scene (singing and playing)

    Audition Exam Correpetition

    Audition Exam Process

    The audition exam consists of two rounds. After the first round, the Exam Committee will decide who
    will proceed to the following round.

    General Requirements
    • knowledge about musical theater and its artistic relationship with theater
    • comprehensive knowledge of musical theater repertoire, as well as lied and chamber music literature
    Audition Programme
    First Round
    • presentation of a chamber musical duo work with own soloist, difficulty level of a Beethoven sonata
    • presentation of a chosen opera scene with several characters (singing and playing) in original language (max. 10 min.)
    • presentation of a chosen discerning solo work on piano. The examination criteria are equivalent to those of an entrance exam for the major of the instrument played.
    Audition Programme
    Second Round
    • Ensemble auditions
      • opera segment with voice soloist – approx. 10 min.
      • chamber music of trio repertoire with instrumental soloist – approx. 10 min.

    The works will be announced 4 weeks before the exam. The voice and instrumental soloists are provided by the school.

    • Prima vista
      • sight-read opera passages
      • sight-read singing (atonal passages without rhythm)
    • Piano minor
      • presentation of two chosen solo works, one of which must be a slow movement of a classical sonata or a baroque work in slow tempo.

    Audition Exam Compulsories

    Compulsory Exam Compositional Technique (written)

    • notation in treble and bass clefs
    • knowledge of keys and their accidentals in major and minor
    • knowledge of major and minor scales, including modal keys
    • determination and notation of intervals in designated octaves
    • determination and notation of triads (major, minor, diminished, augmented) and dominant seventh chords, including reversals
    • knowledge of the primary and secondary functions in major and minor
    • spelling of a short cadence (four parts) according to the functional and level symbols
    • analysis of two short excerpts from different musical epochs

    Compulsory Exam Ear Training (written)

     

    • melody dictation (Baroque and/or classical melodies)
    • rhythmic dictation (binary and ternary rhythms with slurs and/or syncopation)
    • determination of major and minor scales as well as modal scales
    • determination and notation of intervals of designated octaves
    • determination of triads and dominant seventh chords with inversions (ascending and descending)
    • aural analysis of two short music examples from different musical epochs
    Discussion of Suitability

    Small colloquium on general music questions in German language with the following issues:

    • foundation of music history from Bach to present (problematic nature of era categories: baroque/classical/romantic/modern/postmodern)
    • development of orchestral genres
    • development of opera
    Transfer Applicants
    • Applicants for undergraduate studies who have already studied at a RKM-recognized German music school and are applying to transfer to HFM are exempt from taking the exams in piano, composition, and ear training if they are able to provide a matriculation certificate/certificate of enrolment.

      • singing and playing of an opera scene with several participants (late romantic era, in original language)

      30-minute ensemble rehearsal (with singers and soloists)
      Applicants must display their talent in working with singers. The candidate is expected to show good rehearsal technique and the ability to execute own interpretative ideas.

      The work will be announced at the latest four weeks before the audition exam.
      Singers will be provided by the school.

      Applicants must prove an above average talent in general musical areas and technical piano skills.
