Requirements
  • Advanced musical ability in the programme subject which must be demonstrated in the audition exam
  • International applicants without German university entry permission must provide evidence of their German language skills through:
    1. Sprachzertifikat B 2.2 (GER) of the Goethe Institute, ÖSD, telc GmbH or TestDaF – Level 4, DSD II, DSH I or UNIcert II.
    Language certificates must be submitted during enrolment at the latest.
    2. Technical German language skills in music will be assessed during the music theory examination.

Pre-selection

For the study programme Piano Bachelor there will be a pre-selection based on audiovisual recordings subsequent to the application period. Students will be informed about the results via the application portal.

Procedure

Please upload your audiovisual recordings according to the requirements on a server of your choice. State the respective links under "Additional Information" in the application portal.

Please be mindful about the quality of your recordings. Check if the recordings are available via your stated links and work with the internet browser (without password/no login function).

Requirements RecordingsRequirements Repertoire
  • The recordings can't be older that one year.
  • The applicants need to be fully seen during filming. Especially their hands and feet need to be clearly seen.
  • All works/pieces must be performed from memory.
  • Audio and picture editing is not allowed.
  • one polyphonic work of Baroque (e.g. J. S. Bach Preludes and Fugues from “The Well-Tempered Clavier”)
  • a movement of a classical sonata
  • a virtuosic étude

Please note, if the requirements state a complete piece or work, all movements are to be prepared and recorded.

Audition Exam Piano

Audition Programme

For the audition exam, applicants are to prepare the following programme:

  • four works from different stylistic eras, including
    • one polyphonic work (e.g. J. S. Bach Preludes and Fugues from “The Well-Tempered Clavier”)
    • one classical sonata
    • one representative romantic work
    • one work of the 20th or 21st century
  • a virtuosic étude
  • sight-reading

All works must be performed from memory.

Audition Exams Compositional Technique, Ear Training

Compulsory Exam Compositional Technique (written exam)

  • notation in treble and bass clefs
  • knowledge of keys and their accidentals in major and minor
  • knowledge of major and minor scales, including modal keys
  • determination and notation of intervals in designated octaves
  • determination and notation of triads (major, minor, diminished, augmented) and dominant seventh chords, including reversals
  • knowledge of the primary and secondary functions in major and minor
  • spelling of a short cadence (four parts) according to the functional and level symbols
  • analysis of two short excerpts from different musical epochs

Compulsory Exam Ear Training (written)

  • melody dictation (Baroque and/or classical melodies)
  • rhythmic dictation (binary and ternary rhythms with slurs and/or syncopation)
  • determination of major and minor scales as well as modal scales
  • determination and notation of intervals of designated octaves
  • determination of triads and dominant seventh chords with inversions (ascending and descending)
  • aural analysis of two short music examples from different musical epochs
Transfer Applicants
  • Applicants for undergraduate studies who have already studied at a German music school and are applying to transfer to HFM are exempt from taking the exams in piano, composition, and ear training if they are able to provide a matriculation certificate/certificate of enrolment.

Junior Scholars

Programme DurationParticipation in Junior Scholars ends at the age of 18, unless he or she has not completed their schooling. If this is the case, participation will end in the semester that he or she completes schooling.
