Obituary: Kammersänger Reiner Goldberg

17 October 1939 - 7 October 2023
In memory of his artistic and pedagogical life's work, we mourn the passing of Kammersänger Reiner Goldberg, who died on 7 October 2023 shortly before reaching the age of 84. He was one of the most important voices in the world of opera and taught voice students at the Eisler for many years. Numerous successful graduates emerged from his class.

In 2019, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden made him an honorary member of the opera house, where the Heldentenor was a member of the ensemble from 1981 to 2005. In later years, he also appeared on stage there in smaller roles. He was also an internationally sought-after concert and lieder singer and singing teacher.

Reiner Goldberg studied singing at the Dresden Academy of Music and made his debut at the Landesbühnen Sachsen in Radebeul in 1967 before moving to the Dresden Semperoper in 1973. Since the 1980s, KS Reiner Goldberg has made guest appearances in almost all the major tenor roles in Wagner operas in European opera houses, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, at the Bayreuth Festival and at the Salzburg Easter Festival under the direction of Herbert von Karajan.

The great tenor was held in high esteem around the world - both as a singer and as a good colleague in opera houses. Eisler teachers and graduates will always remember him with gratitude.
