Prof Michael Schiefel appointed to the Jazz Institute Berlin

Jazz musician and vocalist Michael Schiefel has been appointed to a professorship for jazz voice/deep voice at the Jazz Institut Berlin for the summer semester 2024. The JIB is a joint institute of the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin and the Berlin University of the Arts.

Prof Michael Schiefel has been teaching as a guest professor at the JIB since 2020 and has also worked as a professor of jazz voice at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar since 2001. He studied jazz voice and composition at the Berlin University of the Arts and has been giving concerts since the early 1990s. During his studies in Berlin, the artist began experimenting with the expressive possibilities of loop devices and other electronics. He has toured the world with his solo vocal programmes, including as a guest of the Goethe-Institut.

In addition to his solo activities, Michael Schiefel works in band formations - in a duo with David Friedman, in his Istanbul Quartet, the Platypus Trio, Wood & Steel Trio and in the Thärichens Tentett, among others. He is a regular guest at international festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), Jarasum Jazz Festival (South Korea), JZ Festival (China), Earshot Jazz Festival (USA), Mediawave Festival (Hungary), Eunics Festival (Chile) and Jazzfest Berlin.

In 2013, he won the ECHO Jazz Award as "National Vocalist of the Year". Michael Schiefel was also involved in the development of "MikeLoop", an iPad loop application for singers.
