  • Opera debut as Don Fernando in Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle at Salzburg Easter Festival 2003, debut at Vienna State Opera as Amfortas in Richard Wagner’s “Parsifal” under Donald Runnicles 2004
  • Performances with the Belcea Quartet, Vienna Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta and projects including the discussion series “Thomas Quasthoffs Nachtgespäche” at Konzerthaus Berlin

  • End of singing career in 2012, performances since then as recite, storyteller and speaker at readings and concerts
  • 2012, debut as actor in the role of Feste in Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” at the Berliner Ensemble
  • Numerous CD recordings with Lieder by Gustav Mahler (Grammy Award for “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” 1999), Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt, Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn, six recordings receiving the German ECHO Prize
  • Numerous national and international awards including the ARD International Music Competition, receipt of the Shostakovich Prize in Moscow, Scotsman Festival Prize at Edinburgh International Festival 2004 (for best singing rendition in classical music for his interpretation of Schubert Lieder), European Cultural Prize 2006, Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal 2009, Herbert von Karajan Music Prize and Wigmore Hall Medal 2011
