Jazz Institute Berlin

Founded in 2005, the Jazz Institute Berlin (JIB) consolidates and focuses the jazz departments of Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin and Berlin University of the Arts into a crystallized base for jazz training with international reach.

The fundamental purpose of training at the Jazz Institute Berlin is to develop an individual artistic identity and learn to work professionally in many different musical situations, materializing original visions at a high artistic standard. Students attain extensive core lessons as well as ensemble and improvisation training in the areas of woodwind, brass, voice, piano, strings, drums, percussion and mallets. Instruction in timing, intonation, transcription, jazz theory, ear training, composition and the learning of stylistics and traditions in playing complement the course. The conveyed content of music production, music business and preventive physiology complete the profile for a career jazz musician.

A high degree of practical experience during study is guaranteed through collaboration in numerous and diverse bands and larger ensembles at JIB, participation in various workshops and the organization of students’ own concert series at Berlin jazz venues. The Jazz Institute also cooperates internationally with renowned music universities in Europe and the USA.
